Langerhans vs. Diaz

36 at-bats, two hits. Both singles. He's never hit much in the past, but this is getting ridiculous. Again, it wouldn't be so bad if Langerhans were the right-hander in the platoon, but since he's the lefty, he's out there most of the time.

I hate being so negative about it, because there are good things going on with this team. The Johnson move looks positively brilliant right now. Hudson looks back to form. The bullpen has been good. But they've got to do something about the fifth spot in the rotation and left field. Smoltz could hit better than Langerhans so far.

I wonder if Pete Orr could play LF? He's a middle infielder by trade, but he's a lefthanded bad and he's got excellent speed. He seems like the prototypical pesky 8th place hitter.

You can prop a bat out in left field and hang a glove on it, if you have to. You've got to have some hitting out of that position.

Orr would probably be better in that platoon than Langerhans right now. I'd like to see Cox just let Diaz play out there every day for awhile to see what happens. He hasn't right-handers badly over his career. But I guess we've all seen how Bobby gets it in his head that somebody is a platoon player, and then that's just the way it is. I guess that's what he thinks about Matt Diaz.
