As it turns out, Mark Redman's first month with the Braves was painful in more ways than one. The struggling left-hander went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday for an ingrown nail on his left big toe. He was expected to have outpatient surgery Wednesday night or today. The move came a day after Redman failed to make it out of the second inning vs. Philadephia, falling to 0-4 with a 10.62 ERA in five starts.

Such a shame they couldn't have sent him down or cut him before the injury. Now he fills up a roster space. Hopefully when he comes back and if he's still a Brave, Bobby will use him in the bullpen instead of as a starter.

Something has to been done. He's been worse than awful.

How is he filling up a roster spot if he's on the DL?

Isn't there a certain limit on players you can have on the DL?

It doesn't impact the 25 man MLB roster at all. There might be some restriction with regard to the 40 man roster, but honestly I've never heard of it being an issue. It's not uncommon to see a team have 8-10 guys on their DL.

Players on the 15-day disabled list still count against the 40-man roster. Whether that's a problem or not depends on how much roster flexibility a team has with regard to their mid-level prospects -- i.e., how many of them have been put on the 40-man roster, whether they'd have to clear waivers in order to be sent down, who's eligible for the Rule 5 draft, etc. Players on the 60-day DL don't count against the 40-man roster.
